Water Canyon freshman running back Alma Barlow is having one of the best seasons in the state, and Andy admitted The Rush has "slept on" him. "Let's be honest," he said. "Shame on us."
Barlow leads the state in rushing with 2,197 yards through nine games, according to MaxPreps. He averages 244 yards per game and 13.8 yards per carry, with 29 rushing touchdowns. The next-closest rusher is Ridgeline's Noah Fiefia at just over 1,700 yards.
The single-season rushing record across all classifications belongs to Jaylen Warren, who ran for 3,099 yards at East in 2016, according to the UHSAA record book. Barlow needs about 900 more yards, or roughly four games at his current pace. Andy noted that the record book has no separate 8-man section. "I think there should be because it's hard to compare," he said.
Barlow is also within range of the single-season rushing touchdown record of 40, set by San Juan's Jagger Nieves last year. How close he gets depends on how deep Water Canyon goes in the playoffs. Andy said the Wildcats were a No. 9 seed last year and won one playoff game.
Barlow's season includes a game of about 500 yards in a 94-61 win over St. Joseph. Water Canyon hosts Panguitch on Wednesday, Oct. 14, at 6 p.m.
"We need to get this kid on the show," Andy said.
