Run the Dang Ball: How West Field Reinvented Itself

Andy's editorial on Wednesday's show focused on West Field, a school only a few years old, and the theme was simple. "Run the dang ball," he said. "That's the theme of today's show."

The Longhorns have changed how they play. Their passing attempts are down from 34 a game last year to 24 this year, and their passing yards have dropped about 40 percent. In their place is a two-back system with Caden Judy and Elijah Woods that Andy called "one of the best in the state."

The running game has helped the defense, too. West Field gave up about 30 points a game last season and is allowing under 20 this year. After an 0-2 start, the Longhorns have won seven straight and are 4-1 in one-possession games.

Andy credited a young offensive line with only one returning starter, Ryan Rowley. He also gave credit to quarterback Easton Eilertson and receivers like Gavin Ortegon, who have given up numbers and targets for the team.

The biggest sign of the turnaround came against Fremont. Last year, West Field lost to the Silver Wolves 65-3. This year, the Longhorns beat them 35-16. "That doesn't happen," Andy said. "You don't lose 65 to 3 and then beat that team the next year. So this is one of the coolest stories going right now in high school sports."

Andy also credited coach Eric Jones for adapting the offense to his personnel. "That's a sign, in my opinion, of a very good coach and a very good team who's willing to just do whatever it takes to win," he said.

West Field plays at Box Elder on Friday, Oct. 16, in a game that could decide the region championship.
