Snow Canyon has made a habit of winning the long ones. The Warriors beat Desert Hills on penalty kicks in the first round of the playoffs, and Scarlet Losee, Lucy Lyon and Kenzlie Stuart joined The Rush before their second-round match at top-seeded Park City.
Against Desert Hills, neither team scored in regulation or overtime. "It was a pretty intense game," Lyon said. Snow Canyon had a lot of possession, but Desert Hills' goalkeeper was strong and "we couldn't get one in."
Losee took Snow Canyon's first penalty kick. "That was stressful," she said. "You just, like, breathe through it. And I had my whole team behind me. So I just walked up and took a deep breath and shot it on the left side. And it went in." Goalkeeper Lucy Bacon then made three saves. "She has made a ton of amazing saves in our games," Stuart said, "but I feel like that really showed she's an amazing keeper for us."
Overtime is nothing new for this group. Losee scored the golden goal on a long free kick to beat Dixie 1-0. "Time was running out, so I just went for it and luck was on our side," she said. Stuart made the final penalty kick in a shootout win over Crimson Cliffs. "Our team never gives up in overtime," she said. "That's what we're really good at, is playing through the last minute."
Lyon credited coach Connor Brown. "Coach Brown pushes us really hard to just always be like a battle at practice and just play at practice how it is in a real game," she said.
The three had plenty of praise for each other. Stuart said Losee is "calm on the ball," adding, "When she gets the ball, I'm not stressed that we're going to lose it." Losee said Lyon is "high vibes all the time," and Lyon said Stuart is "really good at finding me through balls." They also credited center back Norah Fielding and winger Piper Mackay for stepping into bigger roles.
Snow Canyon (12-5) plays at Park City on Thursday, Oct. 15. "We need to give it our all, no matter what, because we don't know if this could be our last game or not," Stuart said. "It can't just be one of us. It has to be all of us."
