Rhett Larsen Breaks Out as a Junior for Morgan

Morgan is 8-1 and unbeaten in 3A North, and junior receiver Rhett Larsen has been one of the Trojans' biggest weapons. In a 48-7 win over Ogden, he caught six passes for 150 yards, including an 80-yard touchdown.

"I went in motion. We called a bubble screen and we saw the outside backer blitz," Larsen said. "George and Charles picked up some good blocks. And then I just ran along the sideline and got in the end zone." George Thurston and Charles Sheffield made those blocks.

He also had a 91-yard touchdown against Sky View, when Morgan sent three receivers deep and the safety went with Thurston. "Owen gave me a good ball and I just scored," Larsen said of quarterback Owen Gilson.

Larsen has 853 receiving yards and 111 rushing yards this season, putting him close to 1,000 total yards. What he likes most is how the Trojans play together. "We don't really care about our stats," he said. "We really focus on just trying to win those games and keep going to the next."

He credited Thurston, who had three touchdown catches against Ogden: "He played dang good." Gilson is "a stud," Larsen said. "He can sling it."

This is Larsen's first season as a varsity starter. "Last year was on JV, then actually fractured my hip, so I ended my season a little early," he said. "This year is my first time starting varsity, so it's been fun."

Asked what Morgan can tighten up, he pointed to finishing plays. "If we get close to the end zone, in the red zone, we gotta punch it in the end zone," he said. "Or they're driving on us, we got to stop them."

Morgan plays at Logan, which is also unbeaten in region play, on Thursday, Oct. 15.
