After starting the season 0-2, West Field has won seven straight, and senior running back Caden Judy has been a big part of the turnaround. The Longhorns' latest win was a 35-16 upset of Fremont.
Judy's favorite play from that game came late, with West Field running out the clock. He got stood up on an outside run and kept driving his legs, and offensive lineman Ryan Rowley kept pushing. "He pushed me for like an extra, like seven yards," Judy said. "I got up and I was like, yelling at my teammates, all hyped up. It was awesome."
After the 0-2 start, Judy said, "We didn't let the two start like snowball effect and just drag us down." Many of the wins since have been close, including 6-0 over Ogden, 30-25 at Roy, 36-30 over Bonneville and 21-20 at Layton. "We're just a lot calmer than we were last year," he said. "The game's never over until the clock's triple zeros." He also credited the defense: "Our defense has been such a huge impact."
He shares the backfield with Elijah Woods, and both regularly top 100 yards. "Elijah's my guy," Judy said. "I wish I was as shifty as he was. He's not selfish about any play. He credits everybody." Judy gives the credit to his line: "I give all my success to my offensive line this year. They've gotten better every single week at the little things."
Against Fremont, Case Martini had an interception. "He's a dog," Judy said. Danny Stitzer II broke a long touchdown, and Judy said "he's going to be good next year."
Judy played JV receiver as a sophomore and missed most of his junior season with a sprained ankle. Now he has 749 yards, nine touchdowns and more than six yards per carry.
West Field plays at Box Elder on Friday, Oct. 16, in a game that could decide the region title.
