Corner Canyon junior receiver Kelen Gold missed the first four games of the season. Since returning, he has been one of the Chargers' biggest weapons, with 308 yards and six touchdowns in his last three games, including four touchdowns in a 41-17 win at American Fork.
On his second touchdown against the Cavemen, Gold saw man coverage with little help over the top. "We saw a mismatch, DBs playing like five yards off, and we just said, throw it up," he said. "Just ran my route. Attacked his outside shoulder and perfect ball, back shoulder, over top, and just made a play on it."
The injury was worse than it sounded. "I have two torn muscles in my shoulder," Gold said. "Took a little bit to get over, a little longer than I wanted." It hasn't kept him from doing the dirty work. "In high school, not a lot of guys want to go out there and just, like, get in rough and go fight," he said. "I know it's a little hard on my shoulder. I gotta manage it a little bit, but I just like getting rough in there."
Gold barely played varsity his first two years behind a deep group of receivers. "I just kind of learned a lot from those guys," he said. "They taught me a lot."
He said quarterback Jaxon Pehrson had "one of his best games of the season" against American Fork and "really just spread the ball around." He praised a defense that keeps forcing turnovers and Diesel Dart, who "does everything" on both sides of the ball.
Corner Canyon is 7-2, with losses to Liberty and Skyridge. "We take everything personal," Gold said. "We know we didn't play to our best of our abilities. So just knowing that we can do better, and we need to do better."
