‘Twitchy’: Judd Thompson Breaks Down Bountiful QB Huddy Malmrose

Bountiful quarterback Hudson "Huddy" Malmrose has the RedHawks 6-2 and unbeaten in region play. Two weeks ago at Alta, Bountiful went for two late and Malmrose hit an out route to win it 29-28.
Judd Thompson broke down Malmrose's film on The Rush's QBU segment, and he had one word for him. "I called him twitchy, which means I think he's explosive," Thompson said. "His throwing motion is compact and quick. He gets rid of it in a hurry, comes out smooth. He's also just kind of moves quick and can get out of stuff." That explosiveness, he said, is "tough to stop as a defensive coordinator."
Bountiful runs a shotgun spread like many teams around the state. "If you squint you may be like, yeah, they kind of look different, but they basically look the same," Thompson said. The message from those offenses: "You got to cover our athletes in space and we've got a quarterback that can run."
The throw that stood out most came in a loss at Herriman, then an unbeaten 6A team. "I've said this a few times, these quarterbacks are getting better," Thompson said. "Normally when you get pressure it's like, okay, I'm out of here, or I'm just going to chuck it somewhere." Instead, Malmrose made a quick move to reset the pocket and hit a dig over the middle. "Those plays take a minute to develop," Thompson said.
Asked who Malmrose reminds him of, Thompson picked Trinidad Chambliss, who led Ole Miss on a College Football Playoff run last year. "A lot of throwing in awkward spots," he said. "Quick release, athletic runner."
Bountiful, fresh off a 38-0 win over Brighton, plays at Olympus on Wednesday, Oct. 14, with a chance to all but clinch the region title.
