Region 9 ended in a three-way tie. Hurricane beat Crimson Cliffs 11-10, Crimson Cliffs beat Snow Canyon 38-16, and Snow Canyon beat Hurricane 28-27, according to MaxPreps. Larry asked which of the three is the best. "It's one of these Bermuda triangles," Andy said.
The case for Hurricane
"This seems like it should be the year of the Tiger," Andy said. "They're playing inspired football. Their defense is awesome. Their offensive line is ferocious. They run through people and over people."
He called quarterback Kannon Cowan "an unbelievable playmaker," whether he is running or "running around in circles and then throwing the ball down the field." Titan Borchardt has helped replace the production Hurricane lost from last season. Andy also credited third-year coach Jerry Cowan. A few years ago, he said, "they were losing every game by 40 points. So it is an unbelievable story, an incredible turnaround."
The case for Crimson Cliffs
If the question is who goes furthest in the playoffs, Andy said, "it's hard not to pick Crimson." The Mustangs have about 21 new starters, but "they've won state championships. They've won championships as underdogs. They've won championships as favorites." Their loss to Hurricane came on a two-point conversion, which Andy called "the gutsy call of the year."
The case for Snow Canyon
Snow Canyon has receiver Isaiah Thompson and quarterback Parker Olson. "You're in the red zone. You've got the guy. Nobody can guard this guy," Andy said of Thompson. "You just throw it up to him. He's going to go make the play." Thompson did that against Hurricane and in the game-winner against Woods Cross. Andy said the Warriors' defense has improved a lot since a 64-62 triple-overtime win over Spanish Fork in Week 1.
The pick
"I don't have a great answer," Andy said. But he gave a slight edge to Hurricane, the No. 2 seed. "It seems like the year of the Tiger," he said. In the 4A playoffs on Oct. 30, Hurricane hosts Park City, No. 4 Snow Canyon hosts Sky View and No. 5 Crimson Cliffs hosts Murray.
