Logan’s Upset Proves 3A’s Top Seed Is Gettable

Morgan looked untouchable in 3A this season. Then Logan beat the Trojans 32-22 on Oct. 15 to win the 3A North title outright, according to MaxPreps. Larry's first question on Tuesday's show: Is the No. 1 seed gettable?

"That win that Logan pulled off at home had the feel of a playoff game," Andy said. "It's a little bit chilly up in Cache Valley. The fans were crazy. It was full. And they just made some huge plays."

Quarterback Easton Favero broke a run of about 65 yards. Freshman Royce Sargent had eight catches for 83 yards and three touchdowns. "Down in the red zone, throw it up to him. He's a killer," Andy said. Ethan Carson had two interceptions, including a pick six. Andy said Carson has about eight interceptions this season, which should put him near the top of the state.

Morgan quarterback Owen Gilson threw three interceptions. "It was a weird game for Morgan because of the turnovers," Andy said. "I thought Morgan was untouchable at the top of 3A. They had dominated everybody." He pointed to Morgan's pass rush with Quade Kuhn and playmakers like Rhett Larsen and George Thurston.

He said the loss might not be the worst thing for the Trojans. "If you're Morgan, you're saying it's good this happened now," he said. "It was kind of a bizarre turnover-type game where you blink your eye and you're down by two scores. You'll lose the region title, but you'd rather have the state title." He still thinks Morgan is the favorite.

Morgan is still the 3A No. 1 seed. Andy has heard the question of how a team that didn't win its region can be the top seed. "We've been doing that for five years," he said. "We've turned our lives over to artificial intelligence."

He said region titles still matter on The Rush. "We respect region winners, and we celebrate them," he said. "We love the pride that you take in beating the schools around your community and neighborhood. Region championships matter."

Morgan has a first-round bye, and Logan's next game is Friday, Oct. 30. (Read about how the coaches predicted every region race.)
