Ogden was down 1-0 to top-seeded Manti with about five minutes left in the 3A girls soccer state championship. Senior Elle Weston scored twice in those final minutes, and the Tigers won 2-1 at Zions Bank Stadium on Oct. 24, according to the Deseret News.
Weston and fellow seniors Gracelynn Litz and Evalyn Farka joined The Rush to relive it. "It's hard to talk about it because I blacked out, honestly," Weston said. "I was like, okay, we got to score. We can't let all this hard work we built up all season go to waste."
A header, then a rocket
The equalizer came off a corner from sophomore Gwenyth Aardema, and Weston headed it in. "There were several of us crying and running over," Litz said. "We were like, okay, we'll just hold it down and go into overtime."
They didn't need overtime. With 55 seconds left, Farka said, a teammate found Weston, who "took a touch with the outside of her right foot, shot it from probably like 25 yards out and just found the top right corner, right over the keeper's head. And everyone just went crazy. It was like the whole stadium just erupted."
"Every emotion," Weston said of the winner. "I was so happy. I was excited, but I was sad. My hands were shaking. I just remember running to the bench, and everyone just surrounded us. It was so surreal."
Every day, a little better
Ogden beat Morgan 2-1 in the semifinals on a goal from junior Alondra Ayala. "Every time we played them, it had been a hard-fought game, and the semifinal was no different," Litz said.
Farka said coach Alexis King's team leaned on one phrase after a rough preseason: every day, get a little better. "We were struggling to find the passion and love for the game, especially us as seniors," she said. The Tigers then went unbeaten in Region 12.
Teammates who carried the load
Litz said Ayala "definitely holds us down" in the midfield and on the wing. "A lot of our games we won in the last few minutes, and Alondra is the reason for that because she's always working hard," she said.
Farka credited senior captain Seren Gee, who mostly plays the six but can move all over the field. "She's always been a very consistent player for us," Farka said. Weston pointed to junior Bryleigh Thomas: "She's a very strong, tough-minded player, and she pushes herself past limits."
