The first round of the Utah high school football playoffs is done in 6A and 5A, and it came with two big upsets: No. 11 Syracuse over Westlake and No. 14 Woods Cross over Box Elder. Scores below are from MaxPreps.
Springville survives the rain
The Rush was at Springville for its 27-10 win over Olympus. Springville trailed 10-7 at halftime in a rainy game, then opened the second half with a kickoff return for a touchdown and later converted a fake punt on a scoring drive. "I was really impressed with Olympus' defense for the most part," Andy said. "They got Springville to a bunch of third downs, but then Springville would throw a screen or convert these long, big plays." He called Springville's Treyton Harris "one of the best in the state."
6A: Syracuse breaks through
Syracuse beat Westlake 35-19, the biggest upset in 6A. Andy picked the Titans last week as the most dangerous double-digit seed. Next up is Corner Canyon, which beat Bingham 35-7.
Herriman beat Weber 55-6 and Davis beat Farmington 37-18, setting up a second-round showdown between the Mustangs' run game and Davis quarterback Paden Toula. Mountain Ridge beat Cedar Valley 50-6 and Lone Peak beat Lehi 20-8, setting up the 2-7 game. "Can Mountain Ridge prove that they really are a contender by beating one of the top teams in Region 3?" Andy asked. Lone Peak is "big, physical. They want to win in the 20s."
5A: Woods Cross plays Cinderella
Woods Cross beat Box Elder 29-26 in overtime. Senior Sam Bahr had two early touchdowns and the winning touchdown run in overtime. Box Elder had won its first outright region title in years behind running back Judd Howells. "You're out in the blink of an eye," Andy said. Woods Cross hosts Alta, which beat Hillcrest 37-7, in the second round.
Fremont avenged a regular-season loss to Westfield, 43-23, and heads to West. Bountiful beat Granger 47-0 and hosts Springville in what Andy called "a black and blue matchup." Orem beat Timpview 55-7 after a 17-14 regular-season game, and Pleasant Grove beat Spanish Fork 34-10 to set up Orem-PG.
