March Madness in October: Anyone Can Win 3A

Andy's editorial on Wednesday's show was about the 3A football bracket. "The 3A bracket in football is March Madness in October," he said.

Other classifications have unbeaten teams at the top, like Mountain Ridge in 6A, West in 5A and Ridgeline in 4A. But Logan's 32-22 win over Morgan changed things in 3A. "Once Morgan got upset in the conference championship game, everything became possible for everybody else," Andy said. "There's so many teams now who feel like, oh wow, we can do what Logan did."

The RPI is close at the top. Andy said Morgan has about 69 points and Logan has about 65, with only about four points separating the top three teams. Last year's state finalists, Manti and Cedar, are lower in the rankings. "But nobody wants to play those guys," he said.

Upset alert: Manti at Canyon View

One first-round game this Friday, Oct. 23, is a rematch. No. 6 seed Canyon View (7-3) hosts No. 11 Manti (2-8). The Falcons beat Manti 28-21 on Oct. 15, according to MaxPreps. "It was 21-21 at the half," Andy said. "They went a full fourth quarter without any scores. So I think this is an evenly matched matchup."

"It sucks for Canyon View, because Manti is better than their seed and they're better than their record," he said. Andy said Manti quarterback Kingston Wright threw for 525 yards against Pine View, five touchdowns against Grantsville and 426 yards and four touchdowns at Juab. "He's throwing it against the good teams," he said.

Canyon View has its own strengths. "Canyon View puts a lot of pressure on the quarterback," Andy said. "They've got a great linebacker corps with Wyatt Copp." He also pointed out that it's hard to beat the same team twice, especially within two weeks.

Andy expects more of these games in 3A. He named Richfield, Canyon View, North Sanpete, Cedar and Manti in the south, and Logan, Morgan, Ogden and Grantsville in the north. "I would predict that 3A is going to have more upset wins in the first couple of rounds than maybe other classifications," he said. (Read our breakdown of every playoff bracket.)
