Mountain Ridge beat Skyridge 41-26 on Aug. 13 and went on to finish the regular season 10-0, according to MaxPreps. Skyridge is still the No. 1 seed in the 6A bracket, and Andy thinks that is a mistake.
"Mountain Ridge should be the number one seed," Andy said. "You can prioritize strength of schedule and your opponent's win percentage and all that stuff. That's fine. Head-to-head needs to be number one."
Skyridge finished 8-1 and first in the RPI with about 80 points. Mountain Ridge had about 78. Andy said he likes the RPI overall. "I respect the RPI and I respect the math," he said. "I like the RPI. I like the move to the RPI." But he said the formula should not override a game everyone saw. "The other downside is when it's just insulting to the regular season, and what we all saw."
He also gave Skyridge's side of it. The Falcons went unbeaten in Region 3 and won the title. "Who else could do that?" Andy said. "They have a point there, except for they played Mountain Ridge and lost earlier on in the season."
The seeding matters because of the path it creates. As the No. 2 seed, Mountain Ridge opens against Cedar Valley, a team it beat 59-0 on Sept. 4. If the bracket holds, the Sentinels would likely face the Lone Peak-Lehi winner and then Corner Canyon before the state championship. "That's a tough game," Andy said of a possible Lone Peak matchup, and Corner Canyon is a team "nobody wants to play before the state championship."
"They're the two seed because the robot told us they should be the two seed, even though we all watched it with our own eyes," Andy said.
He did offer a silver lining for the Sentinels. "We would have to go through these teams anyway," he said. "At some point you've got to go through Corner Canyon, and they're just going to have to do it in the semifinal. That's the winner's approach."
Skyridge opens against Riverton, and Corner Canyon, the No. 3 seed, hosts Bingham. First-round games are Friday, Oct. 30.
