Springville sophomore defender Lizzie Hopkins scored one of the best goals of the year in Utah girls soccer: a diving header in overtime to beat Timpview 2-1.
The Red Devils had lost to Timpview earlier in the season on penalty kicks, and as the Deseret News reported, they came into the game 0-6 in overtime and shootouts. Hopkins admitted the team hates overtime. But when she walked up for a corner kick, she had a feeling. "I think we're gonna win this game," she remembered thinking.
Sarah Penrod took the corner. Hopkins usually runs deeper behind teammate Trevi Jackson, but this time she ran toward the middle. "The ball was coming and I was like, oh, it's coming to me," she said. "I just looked at the ball and then I closed my eyes and hit it, and I looked up and it was in the goal."
The play had a fun backstory. Coach Todd Hollingshead had the team practice diving headers as a challenge between two groups, and Hopkins turned out to be really good at it.
Springville won five of its last six games, including three straight to finish the regular season. Hopkins praised Samantha Hullinger, who is everywhere in the midfield and wins everything in the air. She said she works well with Alivia Robles, an attacking center back, while Hopkins plays more like a sweeper. She also has an easy, almost wordless chemistry with Kaydence Laird, an outside back last year.
The state tournament bracket is expected Saturday, Oct. 10.
