San Juan junior Brigg Palmer scored five touchdowns in the Broncos' 48-0 quarterfinal win over Emery, according to MaxPreps. Andy said Palmer has 2,389 rushing yards this season, plus 34 catches for 428 yards.
His favorite score was the last one, early in the fourth quarter, when one more touchdown would end the game under the mercy rule. "My quarterback says, you know, go take this to the house. Let's end this thing," Palmer said. "He hands me the ball and I end it."
From receiver to running back
Palmer played safety and slot receiver last year and moved to running back and linebacker this season. "It's a little bit different, obviously, from catching the ball to just getting it handed to you," he said. "But I think it's all basically the same stuff. Just get the ball and then do what you can do to get as much yards, as much touchdowns as you can for your team."
At a small rural school, he said, that means playing everywhere. He's on every unit except the extra-point and kickoff teams. "Just doing whatever you can for your team, I think I take pride in that," he said. He also had eight tackles and two tackles for loss against Emery.
The cousin connection
In a rainy game with little passing, Palmer credited his line, especially his cousin, guard Gaige Palmer. "We're super close, grew up together, hang out all the time," he said. "He's a big guy, strong guy. Opens up all the holes." He also praised quarterback Beau Yeomans, who "makes great decisions on our RPOs."
Not just the name on the jersey
San Juan is chasing a sixth straight state title and plays South Summit in the semifinals on Friday, Nov. 6. The Broncos beat South Summit 58-28 in the regular season. "People think like we're just going to win because we're San Juan, just because of the name on our jersey," Palmer said. "But you've got to put in the work." His key: a fast start from a defense he said has "come out a little slow" at times this year.
