Davis Darts senior Sam Coleman ended the regular season with a big night. In a 52-6 win over Weber on Oct. 14, Andy said, Coleman returned an interception 101 yards for a touchdown and a kickoff 79 yards for another, with a couple of pass breakups and some tackles. Davis finished 4-0 in Region 1 to win the outright title, according to MaxPreps.

The pick six came from film study. "We just obviously knew that they like their receivers to run comebacks, stuff like that, from watching film. And we're in that goal line area where comebacks are often used," Coleman said. "I saw that ball thrown up in the air and I was able to make a play on it, get my feet there, and then got some blocks from my D-linemen, linebackers, saw some green grass and took off."

The kickoff return came off a fake reverse to Bode Sparrow. "Everyone's going to want to tackle Bode, right? So fake toss it to him," Coleman said. "You can see probably six of their guys go over to Bode, and then it gives me some free area to run on the sideline."

He credited his teammates. Tight end Cooper Rigby, who scored against Weber, is "probably the best blocker in the whole state," Coleman said. Junior linebacker Bridger Young "was a beast on defense all night," he added. "On my pick six, he was my leading blocker. He was right there paving the way for me."

"You're not going to be able to stop all three"

Coleman is part of a deep receiver group with Sparrow. "It's really a college caliber wide receiver corps," he said. "Every practice, we push each other. And someone's always open in game. You're not going to be able to stop all three."

Davis changed quarterbacks a few games into the season, and Coleman said the team has grown closer since. "Just overall trust for each other," he said. "We all really enjoy Paden. And so it was easier to just kind of all jive together, work as a team."

From quarterback to Utah State

Coleman grew up playing quarterback, then switched to corner as a freshman. "Didn't really know what I was doing," he said. Playing both ways on the sophomore team is what made him love the game. "Wide receiver was so much fun." After waiting his turn behind older receivers last season, he put in offseason work and earned Division I offers. He is committed to Utah State.

Davis (7-3) hosts Farmington on Friday, Oct. 30, in the first round of the playoffs. The winner plays the winner of Herriman and Weber. See how the coaches predicted the region races.
