This article recaps The Rush's QBU breakdown with Judd Thompson from the Thursday, Oct. 29, 2026 episode. Watch the full breakdown.
Judd Thompson of Quarterback U in Lehi joins The Rush every week to break down a Utah high school quarterback. This week he studied Syracuse senior Ledger Wight, who leads the 11th-seeded Titans into a 6A first-round game against Westlake on Friday, Oct. 30, at 5 p.m., according to MaxPreps.
Thompson said Syracuse spreads teams out like most offenses in the state right now, and Wight's job is to run it. "They're spreading it out there, throwing it all over the place, putting the defense in tough situations," he said. "That's kind of Ledger's job here, is to distribute the ball and spread it out."
A dual threat from any angle
What jumped off the film? "He's athletic," Thompson said. "His ability to run is obvious. His ability to throw from awkward angles is obvious."
He said the Titans use a lot of read option where Wight can keep it or flip a bubble screen, which Thompson called a new-age version of the triple option. "His ability to just throw in awkward situations, creating time and space, delivering the ball, stretching out a defense," he said. "These dual-threat quarterbacks that require the defense to account for you in the run game, that's hard."
The run that surprised him
The play Thompson picked wasn't a throw. Early against Granger, Syracuse ran a read-option play Thompson calls an "escort," with the tight end coming back across as a lead blocker. Wight pulled it and took off. "It looks like it's going to be a nice little play, 5, 10 yards. This guy hits the jets," Thompson said. "His speed was shocking to me on this play of just getting out in the open field and just leaving people in the rearview mirror."
Who he reminds Thompson of
Thompson compared Wight to LSU quarterback Sam Leavitt, who transferred from Arizona State. "A true dual-threat runner, thrower. Athletic, throws from all over the place," Thompson said. "Kind of got a little chip on his shoulder, it seems like, watching the film."
Westlake will be a tough test, Andy said, but Syracuse can score with just about anybody. Syracuse went 5-4 in the regular season.
