K'Von Houston stepped out of trigonometry to join The Rush, fresh off a 53-6 win over Cyprus in which he accounted for five touchdowns. According to the Deseret News, he completed 23 of 28 passes for 328 yards and three touchdowns.
His favorite play was a climb route to Miles Ence for a touchdown. "I just knew the game was going to be easy," Houston said.
Hillcrest is 6-2 overall and 4-1 in region play, with Taylorsville and Kearns left on the schedule. It has been a long time since the Huskies had a winning season, and Houston says the difference is chemistry. "Our guys have been playing together for so long," he said.
Houston's own path started with a setback. He was hurt in his first start as a freshman and missed the rest of the season. He said it taught him that an injury isn't the end, and his coaches have helped him understand his reads since then. He now has 67 career touchdown passes, close to 6,000 career passing yards, and a six-touchdown game against West Jordan.
He has plenty of help. Alani Latu is shifty and explosive, Levi Lavaka is his deep-ball threat, and Ence is a big body with good hands. Houston credits an offensive line that lacks size but fights, and says his time in the pocket has gotten a lot better. What sets him apart, he says, is doing a lot in a little bit of time and using his feet.
His biggest influences are his mom and dad. The lesson from Hillcrest's losses: when the Huskies play like a team, they can compete with anybody.
