Hurricane opened the 4A playoffs with a 45-7 win over Park City, and two Tigers who powered it joined The Rush: senior lineman Tanner Matua and junior Titan Borchardt.
"I think it was just a great team effort, all aspects of the game," Matua said. "Our coaches put in a great game plan. Our offense played lights out." Hurricane also scored on a blocked punt.
Borchardt breaks loose
Andy said Borchardt ran for 185 yards on eight carries, about 23 yards a carry, with three touchdowns. His favorite was a 75-yard run. "It's not every day you get a long run like that. It was fun to open up and really be able to show my speed," he said. "The blocking the whole game was unreal, so I can't take all the credit."
Matua's nose for the ball
Matua had five tackles, a tackle for loss and a sack, and Andy said he has five fumble recoveries this season. "Our coaches always say the distance from the ball shows your dedication to your team," Matua said. "So we always try to have that motor in each and every one of us."
"Outhit, outhustle"
Hurricane's only loss was 28-27 at Snow Canyon, according to MaxPreps. "Our motto is outhit, outhustle," Borchardt said. "We've just been trying to continue to get better and be the best that we can be."
Both praised quarterback and safety Kannon Cowan. "He's not afraid to run it, but he can also throw it," Borchardt said. Matua said Cowan's toughness "is just contagious to the rest of the team. When he makes these plays where he's just lowering his shoulder and taking these hits, it affects the team in a positive way."
They also credited defensive newcomers: senior cornerback Porter Allred, a first-year starter; Russ Ellison, who "just flies around the field," Borchardt said; and Darren Jackson, who moved in from California.
Salem Hills is next
Hurricane hosts Salem Hills on Friday, Nov. 6, at 6 p.m. "We kind of started off slow last week against Park City," Matua said. "As soon as that first whistle blows, we've got to be sharp in our playmaking and decisions."
